Description
Like most small towns in the south, houses popped up around the local textile mill. Such was the case in my hometown of Lancaster, South Carolina when the new Springs textile mill opened in 1896. It soon grew to stretch some six city blocks. The homes were built soon after to house workers and their families who often shared the homes with other families. Over time, many have fallen into disrepair and some have burned down or fell in on themselves.
The mill shut down in 2003 and was soon torn down. In 2016 upon my return to my hometown, I decided the document the current shape of the homes in the old Mill Hill.
Pictured is the old general offices for the mill, one of only a few structures that did not get torn down. Initial plans were to turn it into a community center, but those plans never materialized.
