Description
During a recent renovation of the old county jail in Lancaster, they blasted the stucco of and found this stone was underneath. They apparently plan to leave it like this as well they should,
The building has a grim albeit interesting history. It was designed by noted architect Robert Mills who also designed the Washington Monument. It served as a jail for 150 years until a fire killed eleven prisoners in 1979. Two of the second floor windows still have bars covering them.
