Description
In the hey day of passenger trains, Atlantic Coast Line trains used to ply these rails. There are, in fact, still rails under the grass on this abadoned rail line, but they are disconnected in other places and paved over at road crossings. We're in Marion, South Carolina. To the rear of me about a mile up the line, the tracks are still in use by RJ Corman Railroad (former Carolina Southern) and cross a CSX line at grade.
The last passenger train plied these rails in the late 60s before the formation of Amtrak. CSX began abandoning this track in the 1980s.
