Description
The famous-to-Lancaster clock tower at the site of the former Springs Mills in Lancaster. The found of the once thriving textile empire, Colonel Leroy Springs, was said to be buried under there upon his death in the 1930s. At the time, it was actually open land on the mill property. When they added on in the 1960s, the Colonel's son, Elliot White Springs, now head of the company, told contractors to leave him buried there. After demolition of the mill, it is unclear what happened to his remains. They may still be in the group at the same spot.
A sad sign of the times. The once thriving and prosperous Springs Mills plant in Lancaster, SC was being torn down one brick at a time by a scrap company at the time of this shot in 2005. I ever stepped foot in it, but the hole in the ground where it stood for more than a hundred years haunts me. My father worked there in the 50s. My uncle worked there for decades. Both of my grandparents worked there. And that's typical for many in my hometown.
