Artist's Description

Roses have been planted along Main Street in Lancaster, South Carolina for the Red Rose Festival later this month.

Known as the Red Rose City, Lancaster was settled in the 1700s by pioneers from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In turn, the Pennsylvanians traced their city's founders to English areas under the House of Lancaster, which had a red rose as its emblem.

The court house was designed by Robert Mills in 1928, who also designed the old jail a few blocks over as well as the Washington Monument, the court house now serves as a meeting center for the county it resides in.

It features fine reeded woodwork and vaulted ceilings. A series of double barrel brick vaults supports the second floor and forms the ceiling of the first.

This court house served in it's intended purpose until 2008 when an arsonist nearly destroyed the building. The building was saved, but a new curt hose was erected next door.
