Description
Amur (or Siberian) tigers are the largest living cats in the world. Males weigh between 390 to 675 pounds while females typically weigh between 220 and 370 pounds. They are orange and white with black stripes which help them blend into tall grasses or forest undergrowth. These beautiful cats are listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to poaching and habitat destruction. There are an estimated 450 Amur tigers in the wild and 150 in captivity in zoos in the United States. Riverbanks Zoo has maintained and bred tigers since the zoo opened in 1974. The five living subspecies of tigers are found in forests, swamps and grasslands of eastern Asia. Amur tigers range through eastern Russia, Manchuria and Korea.
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is a 170-acre zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden located along the Saluda River in Columbia, South Carolina. The zoo opened in April, 1974. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is South Carolina's largest gated attraction, averaging over one million visitors each year—a considerable amount for a zoo serving a region as small as Columbia (the Columbia metropolitan area has only 800,000 people).[2] Riverbanks is a four-time winner of the Southeastern Tourism Society's Shining Example Award as the Southeast's top tourist attraction and a two-time winner of the SC Parks Recreation and Tourism Governor's Cup Award as South Carolina's Leading Attraction.
