Artist's Description

The old county jailis the oldest building in Lancaster, South Carolina dating back to the 1820s. Iignificant as an example of Robert Mills' public buildings (particularly the construction of jails) in the first half of the nineteenth century; significant both for its architectural elements and its design. It was designated a landmark by the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s. A tragic fire broke ut in 1979 and killed nine inmates inside.

The old jail last housed the Lancaster County Emergency Management offices.
