Back in 2005, I got word that there was a CSX work train coming my way with one of the last units painted for the Seaboard System, CSXT SD40 #4601. I went up to Waxhaw, North Carolina where I was lucky to intercept it. Luck wasn't entirely in my favor though. The sun was wrong for the 4601 leading the train from South Carolina.
But they did a curious thing in Waxhaw. They put their train on a siding, uncoupled the locomotives from it and then ran around the train to the other side. This let me get a good shot of the lead unit, then a rare bird on the CSX roster, GE B36-7 #5859, as well as a decent broadside shot of the trailing unit. I'd never catch the 4601 leading before CSX retired it.
South Carolina native, photographer, railroad aficionado, I am happy when there is a camera strapped around my neck and something interesting in my viewfinder. This is my work, and I am proud to share it with you. I like to shoot railroads and interesting buildings and skylines as well as people. I am a former award-winning TV News photographer with the most watched TV station in South Carolina who has also photographed (and wrote) for newspapers and magazines such as Trains and Railroad and Railfan. Message me any comments or questions you may have. I go by Joe.
