Description
A railroad crossing sign on Andrews Road in Columbia, South Carolina is being overtaken by kudzu. Kudzu is an invasive weed that was originally introduced to America by Japan at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. By the 1940s, American farmers were planting it to stop soil erosion, a decision many of them no doubt soon regretted. Kudzu notoriously grows quickly like rabbits overtaking and killing other plant life and old houses.
Kudzu's environmental and ecological damage results from its out dueling other species for needed resources. Kudzu competes with native flora for light, and acts to block their access to this vital resource by growing over them and shading them with its leaves. Native plants then die as a result.
Scientists predict kudzu will kill us all by 2050.
