Description
Most railroads, esecially a tourist line, would not leave a derailment beside their main line for all their passengers to see. But then, this was a movie set for the Harrison Ford/Tommy Lee Jones version of "The Fugitive." The train v. bus wreck scene was filmed on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and they left the engines here. The railroads Tuckasegee River Excursion passes this area.
Even though the movie was set in Illinois, much of it was filmed in North Carolina. When Richard Kimble is seen driving the ambulance through town at the railroad tracks, this is nearby Dillsboro. The dam scene was near here too in western North Carolina.
The locomotive nearest us is a former Southern Railway EMD GP30 while the lead engine from the movie is an old Seaboard Coast Line GE U18B. Neither locmotives have their insides at tis point and in the movie, the GSMR #777 provided the power for the train out of sight at the rear.
The movie was set in Illinois and the producers came up with a faux railroad for the movie. It's possible that the engine nearest us at one time may have plied these rails. It was former Southern Railway GP30 #2586. If you look closely, you can see the old road number fading through on the cab door.
