Description
I did not realize it when I was there, but this may have been the last time I see elephants at Riverbanks Zoo. The last time I was there in 2013, there were two elephants, Robin and Belle. Robin unexpectedly passed away this summer leaving Belle by herself at the zoo. Riverbanks had already announced they were working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) African Elephant Species Survival Plan to find a new home for Robin and Belle with a large herd of other elephants to help them be more sociable.
38 year old Belle, seen here in November 2019, came to Riverbanks Zoo from the Columbus Zoo in 2001.
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is a 170-acre zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden located along the Saluda River in Columbia, South Carolina. The zoo opened in April, 1974. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is South Carolina's largest gated attraction, averaging over one million visitors each year—a considerable amount for a zoo serving a region as small as Columbia (the Columbia metropolitan area has only 800,000 people).[2] Riverbanks is a four-time winner of the Southeastern Tourism Society's Shining Example Award as the Southeast's top tourist attraction and a two-time winner of the SC Parks Recreation and Tourism Governor's Cup Award as South Carolina's Leading Attraction.
