Description
Having just swapped out cars with the Greenville & Western, a Pickens RR crew shoves across Hwy. 76 in Belton back onto their own trackage. The two shortlines use each other to give themselves connections to a second Class 1 carrier. The G&W connects with CSX in Pelzer and the Pickens with Norfolk Southern in downtown Anderson.
The Pickens is an interesting railroad. It's named for a county it no longer operates in. They began operating in Anderson in the 1990s over former Southern Railway track as a seperate operation from thier original line that ran from Easley, SC to the namesake town of Pickens. The original line floundered for years until theu finally abandoned it and ripped the track up in 2013.
Meanwhile, this secton of track between Belton and Anderson seems to be doing pretty well, although physically it could be in better shape.
PICK #9507 was built by GE in 1974 as Seaboard Coast Line #351, to Seaboard System #1949. CSX was formed through various mergersof older lines and while this unit initially kept the number 1949, CSX eventually painted her in a stand out orange scheme for Maintenace of Way Service and renumbered her 9507, When the Pickens bought her in the early 2000s, they liked the paint so much, they repainted her orange!
