Description
I liked this shot because t tells a story. There were a lot of people at the photography session in 2012 at the North Carolina Transportation Museum. In some shots, I wanted just the locaomotives. But including a small number of the fellow photographers told a story, too. It felt like a red carpet event and the stars were the train engines. In this shot, the new kid on the block, Norfolk Southern AS4400AC #8114, psses a fading star in the original Norfolk Southern Baldwin AS-416 #1616.
NS 1616 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1955. After Southern Railway took over the original Norfolk Southern, they sold all the remaining Baldwin locomotives. The 1616 went to the Peabody Coal Company in Lentzburg, Ill. They donated the engine to the State of North Carolina in 1981, and volunteers restored the locomotive to its late 1950s early 1960s appearance. It is now on display in the Robert Julian Roundhouse.
