Description
Norfolk Southern Conrail heritage unit poses at the NS Heritage Locomotives get together in Spencer, North Carolina in 2012. NS 8098 was built in February 2012 and was one of 20 new locomotives to receive paint schemes of ancestor lines.
Southern #6900 has an interesting history. It was built by Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in 1951. Originally numbered 2923, it was used in passenger service along the east coast. The 6900 ended its career on the Southern pulling the Southern Crescent from Washington, DC to Atlanta, GA. After Southern Railway ceased passenger service in 1979, the 6900 was donated to the NCTHC the next year. Norfolk Southern Corporation restored the exterior of the locomotive in 1995 at Chattanooga, TN. It is now on display in the Robert Julian Roundhouse.
