Description
Kimbrell's Furniture, which has since closed, for many years sat on "top of the hill" in downtown Chester.
There's an interesting history in regards to the artillery in the foreground of the photograph. In 1986, the congregation of Calvary Church in Chester hired a contractor to add on to their building. Upon digging, four of these were found buried on grounds. It was learned they were 3.0 inch 10 pound confederate parrott rifles which had been built during the Civil War. At least one had been used during the War Between the States. They were delicately removed from the site and eventually two were placed on display in downtown. A third is at the South Carolina Museum in Columbia. Chester retains the fourth gun and it is used at living history events and re-enactments throughout the State of South Carolina and nationally when possible.
The four guns found in Chester are thought to be among only 77 that survive to this day.
Chester is a small rural city in Chester County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,607 at the 2010 census, down from 6,476 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Chester County.
