Description
Two Carolina Southern GP18s at Mullins, South Carolina. The railroad was taking the day off at the time of this photograph, but has since shut down for the most part. This is former Atlantic Coast Line track sold off by CSX Railroad in the 1980s. Carolina Southern was built as Norfolk & Western Railway GP18 #951 in 1961. She was eventually sold to Mid Atlantic RR, same number. The MARR was a predecessor to the Carolina Southern. She was one of two locomotives that RJ Corman bought with the railroad and both still serve the same rails as they did before.
The Carolina Southern RR shut down since 2011 due to the FRA finding that some of their bridges were in bad shape. The owners, Ken Pippin and his son, Jason, tried to get trains rolling again, but found it hard to finance the needed improvements. A shortline holding company, R.J. Corman Railroad Group, has stepped in and bought the railroad.
The history of this long goes back a long way before the Carolina Southern was formed in 1995 to acquire the line previously known as the Mid-Atlantic Railroad. In 1987, CSX sold the former Atlantic Coast Line rails to local investors as Duvall Transportation. A separate railroad fell under Carolina Southern control always known as the Waccamaw Coast Line. The WCL was a line from Conway to Myrtle Beach.
