Description
This is a bit of a rare run on the South Carolina Railroad Museum which is an all volunteer passenger excursion railroad. On this day in 2013, they were running one of two steam engines owned by John and Byron Gramling. Flagg Coal #75 and Lehigh Valley #126 travel the country delighting train fans on rails that would not normally see a steam engine anymore.
This train, led by Rockton, Rion & Western #2028, followed behind the steam train in case any cinders started small fires along the track. The tank car is filled with water. It appears to be standing room only on that caboose.
RRW #2028 is an SW8 locomotive built by EMD in 1951 for the US Air Force. They eventually donated it to the South Carolina Railroad Museum who lettered it for the Rockton, Rion & Western. The railroad the museum operates on was originally the Rockton & Rion Railway and worked two old rock quarries on the line before they were closed by Martin Marietta who donated the railroad to the museum.
