Carolina Southern Railroad approaches Conway, South Carolina in July, 2006. CALA #100 is an EMD GP18 built for the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific (CRIP) as their #1333. This was one of the locomotives that stuck around after R.J. Corman took over the line. It retains it's number but has been repainted into the red and grey RJC scheme.

The Carolina Southern has been shut down since 2011 due to the FRA finding that some of their bridges were in bad shape. The owners, Ken Pippin and his son, Jason, tried to get trains rolling again, but found it hard to finance the needed improvements. A shortline holding company, R.J. Corman Railroad Group, has stepped in and bought the railroad. The deal is expected to close in August, 2015. This will in effect make the Carolina Southern a fallen flag railroad.

The history of this line goes back a long way before the Carolina Southern was formed in 1995 to acquire the line previously known as the Mid-Atlantic Railroad. In 1987, CSX sold...
